Authors + Donated Books = LOVE!

June 13, 2009

This will be a quick entry because we are, as I type, frantically packing for our annual Relay for Life.

Relay for Life is an all-night walk and camp-out sponsored by the American Cancer Society in towns across the US to raise funds for cancer research and prevention. Each year, I chaperone an all-teen team and we camp out in the park, raise a little (harmless) havoc, and raise money for the ACS.

We do a lot of things to raise money – provide face-painting and temporary tattoos at the event, sell food and drinks, run carnival games, and this year for the first time we’ll even be offering temporary hair dye (the kind you spray on) in a host of astonishing colors.

But the biggest part of our fundraising involves creating book baskets for raffle in the Tricky Tray tent. The Tricky Tray tent is basically a big tent with different themed baskets – all organized and put together by the various teams – for raffle. There are usually sports-themed baskets, baskets with liquor (Basket of Cheer, indeed!), movies themed baskets… You name it, it’s probably there. Our contribution is, not surprisingly, always big baskets of mostly-signed books.

We’ve been very fortunate to have a TON of generous authors provide books for our baskets every year, but this is the biggest haul yet. Feast your eyes on these beauties!

Following is a partial list of the authors that have made donations. We’ve also created a video blog naming each and every author and book. We’ll try to get that posted Monday or Tuesday, but in the meantime, I just want to say thank you to every author who is so generously donated to our cause. Last year, our town raised $200,000 for the American Cancer Society, and you are all very much a part of that effort.

Lisa Mantchev – signed ARC of her book Eyes Like Stars

Saundra Mitchell – Signed hardcover of her book Shadowed Summer AND a much-coveted signed copy of John Green’s Paper Towns. This is going to REALLY up the value of that basket!

C. Lee MacKenzie – three signed copies of her book Sliding on the Edge with three gorgeous horse charm bookmarks

Kimberly Derting – $25 Barnes & Noble gift card

Cindy Pon – signed copy of her book Silver Phoenix

J. E. Mcleod – hardcover copy of her book Waiting to Score

Danielle Joseph – copy of her book Shrinking Violet

Megan Crew – signed copy of her book Give Up the Ghost

Sydney Salter – signed copy of her book My Big Nose and Other Natural Disasters

Megan Frazer – copy of Suite Scarlet by Maureen Johnson AND an ARC of her book Secrets of Truth and Beauty

Charity Tahmaseb – signed copy of her book (with Darcy Vance) The Geek Girls Guide to Cheerleading)

Caitlin Kittredge – FIVE of her books that enabled us to create an entirely separate adult book basket (we usually just do YA and/or kids). MWAH!

Nina Malkin – signed hardcover of her book Swoon (I LOVE this cover!)

Tina Ferraro – signed copies of her books The ABCs of Kissing Boys and Top Ten Uses for an Unworn Prom Dress

Stacey Voss – Two copies of her book Blood and Thunder

Cynthia Leitich-Smith – six signed bookmarks (Cynthia also donated a book last year)

And last but not least, my publisher, Little Brown Books who donated two Alphas posters, two Alphas tee-shirts, a hardcover of Spooner by Pete Dexter and hardcover of The Gift of an Ordinary Day by Katrina Kennison (both books were added to Caitlin’s to make up our adult book basket).

I’m very sorry if I’ve missed anyone! In between typing, I’m loading tents, packing coolers, and generally running around like crazy! But we’ll be posting our vlog running down the contributors as well as some video from Relay itself as soon as we catch our breath.

Until then, I’ll just say that you guys are the greatest.

Hey, thanks for the shout out – and for helping to raise money for cancer research. I went to a nearby Relay for Life yesterday and walked a lap for my boy — it was his 2 year cancer-free “birthday”. I hope your Relay is as much fun as that one. And please, just because we won’t be Debs next year, don’t hesitate to hit me up for a donation, k?

Oh. My. Goodness. I’m basically drooling over the books right now. And most of them are signed! But the books are for a great cause. πŸ™‚

I love reading about your adventures! Can’t wait to see more.

Michelle, what an awesome event and beautiful baskets! ACS is very near and dear to my heart as I lost my grandfather to cancer. I hope you all have loads of fun and raise tons of $$. Whoever gets those books is going to love them!
