What You Can Do!
I want to thank everyone for all the well wishes and offers of support. I’ve been getting all kinds of messages from people asking what they can do to help, so I thought I’d share a couple of things for those of you who don’t know.
The first thing you can do to help a book you like is to post reviews on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Borders. If you go to those sites and type in the book you want to review, the listing will come up and you should see a button that says something like, “Create your own review” or “Post a review”. All you have to do is review the book from there – and it can be short and simple. One sentence even!
The other thing that a lot of people know is that it helps a book’s ranking to have people click “Like” under the good reviews and/or “Yes” under “Was this review helpful to you.” So if you have the time and feel inclined, commenting positively under the good reviews will also help the overall standing of the book.
Lastly, a lot of people discount the importance of social networking, but I happen to be on the other side of the fence; I think it makes a HUGE difference. Think about it; if one person posts a bulletin or update about a book, movie… ANYTHING! and they get one other person to post to their group of Friends and so on and so on… well, that’s A LOT of people who get to hear about a book they’ve never heard about. Maybe they won’t all go out and buy it, but there’s a reason companies spend BIG money on Brand ID. It makes a different to see a cover and hear a title over and over again. It sticks in the brain, and when people get to talking about books or they’re in the bookstore, even if they don’t realize it, the books they’ve seen and heard about over and over again will be the ones with which they feel most familiar. So if you’re inclined and want to help, it would be awesome if you’d be willing to post a bulletin or announcement on Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, writing it across the sky, sending a singing telegram… er, okay, never mind those last two. 😉 Seriously, though, it can be as simple as “Suggesting” the page of your favorite book to your Friends – and Facebook makes this very easy by giving you a little link underneath the default photo of any page. It says “Suggest to Friends” and if you click on it, you can either choose which Friends you think would be interested in the book or you can send the suggestion to all your Friends. It helps! And they can decide from there if it’s something they want to add.
And while you’re at it, if there are any other books you like (*cough*Eyes Like Stars*cough*)…
Take a minute to review and rate their reviews, too!
And THANK YOU! There are SO many books out there and you guys make ALL the difference in spreading the word.
