Thursday Night Write – and a Prophecy Freebie!!!

July 1, 2010

Time for another edition of Thursday Night Write. All writers are invited to post an excerpt of original work no more than 300 words. Be sure to leave a comment for at least one other participant if you post one of your own.

I’ve been trying REALLY hard to stay on top of the TNW entries and to comment each and everyone myself, but the truth is, I’m failing miserably. Writing my post the other day about The Business of Writing, I realized that I haven’t been managing expectations – my own or anyone else’s – in this department. I’d forgotten how utterly crazy the weeks leading up to and following a release, and with the Prophecy paperback releasing TODAY (Woot!)) and Guardian of the Gate coming out in just 30 days, I’m barely managing to keep my head above water.

I think it’s time to be honest about the fact that sometimes, I’m just not going to get to all the entries. I DO read them all, but commenting in a thoughtful way takes a lot of time, and as much as I love doing it, it’s just not always possible.

So from here on out I’m going to promise only to KEEP TRYING. Sometimes I’ll get to a few of them, sometimes I’ll get to all of them, and sometimes I won’t get to any of them. I will continue to read them each week, though, and to invite other authors as guest commentators. I also encourage you guys to spread the word by posting the TNW links via Facebook and Twitter. You’d be surprised at some of the people who read your work here.

😀

On another note, I have a freebie for you!!! The very talented Anna over at Booknerds designed some beautiful bookplates for me, and I’m going to offer them completely free to anyone who already owns a Prophecy paperback or purchases one between today and Tuesday, July 13th. If I

Aren’t they GORGEOUS?!

These are very limited edition, but I will give them out as long as they last for the Prophecy paperback and again to celebrate the first week of the Guardian hardcover. These stick right to the inside of your book and if you line them up just right on the title page, you’ll find they continue the vine pattern of the interior art.

This is total honor system stuff! All you have to do to get a bookplate is leave a comment in this post telling me where you bought or how you got your Prophecy paperback (example; the Barnes & Noble in Newburgh, NY., as a gift for my birthday, etc.).  Make sure to leave your email address. It won’t post publicly, but I’ll be able to see it so that I can contact you for your address.

Easy, right?

I’m happy to personalize the bookplates, so if you want to give the book as a gift or in a giveaway or something, just tell me how you want the bookplate addressed when we contact you. Unfortunately, I have to keep this one a US-only giveaway. I’m sorry!

Thanks, guys, for all the support you’ve offered me this past year and for the support you continue to offer me in the way of encouragement and your willingness to spread the word about the Prophecy of the Sisters trilogy. It means more than you know.

I knelt in the middle of this open field, feeling colder than I’ve ever felt. The sun was beating down on me mercilessly, but I felt nothing but the chill in the air William left behind.
I remember that day so vividly, every detail ingrained in my memory, not allowing me to forget a single second.
I reached into my pocked and took out my cell, I punched in the number for Vlad Knight, he was the only one I could trust with this information.
    “Hello?” a deep voiced answered.
“Vlad? It’s Lilah.” I said back.
“Lilah! Where the hell have you been? I’ve had every single Guardian on staff looking for you!”
“I know, and I’m sorry.” I shifted and sat in the grass.
“What’s wrong? You sound…like something has happened? You’re still not upset about William are you?” my throat tightens when I heard him say his name, “Listen Lilah, you had to kill him. He deceived us all, no one blames you and-”
“He isn’t dead.” I almost screamed into the receiver.
There was a good few seconds of silence, I use this time to tell him what just happened. “Vlad I have no idea what is going on, but it was him! It was his voice, it was his presence…his darkness.” my voice dropped to a whisper as I spoke the last words.
Suddenly I felt the temperature drop dramatically, “Oh no.” I mouth the words, my voice wouldn’t work.
I whipped my head around, trying to find him, dropping my phone in the process.
The wind picked up strong where I sat, affecting only me, just like it had earlier. The sun’s heat still didn’t reach me, ‘This can’t be happening again’ I thought.
Just then I felt his lips at my are once again, “Hello Lilah.” his breath still as cold as before.
I slowly turned my head, determined to see his face. Before I could see him I felt his hands on my throat, digging nails into my neck.
“Embrace the darkness, love, it’s better this way.” he breathed before he kissed my lips, and my world slipped into a void.

Pools of water splashing below my feet. I’m not sure what time it is, only knowing that the full moon is high over my head, like a porcelain plate being placed upon a newly washed navy tablecloth, the stars as silverware, endless amounts of silverware, scattered recklessly around, each twinkling in an excited way, one that I’ve only caught a glimpse of when it’s late, very late.
They lured me out of my room with their light, their twinkling, their beautiful patterns. I followed their light down the stairs, each illuminated in a different shade of white…or is it yellow…it spilled through the open window, the curtains fluttering, dancing along with their light. It overflowed into the kitchen, out of my heart. The light…So pure.
And now. The puddles below my feet, dancing beads of water jumping out of their homes, meeting the light with me, bursting into drops of rainbows against the light. The plants surrounding me saw the light, their leaves turned up towards it, the beautiful flowers with a mystical glow cast upon them.
The air, it was so still, so fragile as if one wrong move would cause it to shatter and fall to earth. Such an exotic get away, in my own garden. Such a break from the usual commotion that was continuous, breaking down the walls of my mind. It seemed impossible for it to be the same place I visited every afternoon.
Silence. The light seemed to dull. The water drops fell. The sky darkened. What was happening? Pressured rushed to my ears, causing them to pop. Everything around me was swirling, such a lovely mixture of colors, though…
Black. There was nothing but black. My arms outstretched before me, searching wildly for something that could explain this. I found nothing. Nothing but more black.

Week 15 of The Amulet of Otherness! Recap:Venetia finds an amulet that is secretly a portal to the Realm of Otherness, which Arachne wants to open to take over the world. Venetia along with her classmate, Andrick, and two time travelers, Reviva and Cadmon, work together to protect the amulet. I’m going to go back a little and write the scene where they visit the Oracle of Delphi. So, please read and enjoy 🙂

    INT. ORACLE’S ABODE. MORNING.

VENETIA (seventeen with long, brown hair, golden brown eyes, and a brown school girl’s clothes with torn stockings), ANDRICK (eighteen with dark, curly hair, green eyes, and wearing a slightly unbuttoned oxford, and relaxed brown pants), REVIVA (a woman with flowing blonde hair, misty gray eyes, and white robes) and CADMON (a good looking man in his late twenties with short red hair, green eyes, and upscale casual wear)enter into a glossy temple. B.G.-a circular room surrounded by pillars. The center has a cauldron, which has a pink, bubbly liquid that seeps billowing pink steam. At first, they are not sure if the Oracle is there or not, but they see her pop her head through the smoke. The ORACLE (a young woman with stringy, blonde hair, a band of a ratty cloth over her eyes, and a very flowy, lavendar toga)looks in their direction and swerves her head, as if it was caught in a wave.

    ORACLE:
    Who goes there?

    CADMON:
    Some weary travellers in
    search of answers.

    ORACLE:
I see you have a quest that
    you wish to end.

    VENETIA:
I have an amulet that opens
    up the Realm of Otherness,
and we want to destroy it.
Do you know how we can do
    this.

The Oracle sifts her head through the steam, thinking over the question. She looks to the sky and holds out her arms as if she is waiting for something to land.

    ORACLE:
    The amulet chooses its protectors.
It is the destiny of those who find
it to keep it safe. You will have to
overcome many dangers before you will
    find your answers.

    ANDRICK:
But can’t you tell us where or
    how we can destroy it?

The Oracle takes a moment to mull it over. She walks in an almost drifting way over to them and puts her hand on Venetia’s shoulder as she answers.

    ORACLE:
You will find the place to destroy the
amulet where you least expect it when the
opportunity is found by the wearer.

The Oracle pats Venetia’s shoulder and walks back into the steam. The steam clears and she is gone. The four look very confused.

    “Lace?” Sarah pleads.

“I thought we weren’t talking,” I snap, flipping my long, straight blond locks over my shoulder as I turn to face her. And I know I’m being a total bitch, but you’d be pretty pissed, too, if you were forced to travel with your (ex) best friend whom you found kissing the guy you were interested in.

She sighs, looking around at our surroundings. It’s 9:00 a.m. on December 26th. We’re sitting in the Tampa airport, waiting for our flight to Boston. Our final destination is Stowe, Vermont. We planned this vacation for months, and I finally got my parent’s permission for us to travel alone. But, then, a few days ago at Sarah’s Christmas party—too late for ticket refunds—I found her kissing Jason. My crush. The one she knew I liked.

I talked about him during late-night texts. His kissable lips, cute blue eyes, and cool style were always topics of conversation. We discussed ways for me to snag him, contemplating some crazy methods we knew would never work.

So why did she kiss him? I don’t know. And, yeah, maybe I’m being unreasonable. It’s not like Jason and I were dating. But I’m too mad to calmly talk about what happened. The pain, for some reason, seems just as bad as if I was Jason’s girlfriend.

    ——————-

“He lied!” Chloe whispered angrily later that night, throwing a balled-up sock across the room.

“Shut up, will you?” Alethea sighed. She gave the bedroom door a nervous glance. “You’re going to wake them up.” She was sitting up in bed, looking annoyed, having just been woken up by Chloe. The two desk lights were casting a weak glow over the room, the digital clocks burned “2:00” just beneath the lamps.

Chloe sat down on her bed again, tucked her legs under her, crossed her arms, and said again, “He lied.”

“Well, of course he lied. He’s been lying to you most of your life, in case you haven’t picked up on that.” Chloe continued pouting and didn’t answer. Alethea sighed. “Are these crazy-late-night talks going to become a thing? Because I need more sleep than that.”

“You’re the one who said we couldn’t talk in front of the parents. We can’t always just wait to talk on the walk to school.”

“I know. I just meant if we keep needing to talk at night, I need to go to bed earlier.”

Chloe glared. “You’re missing the point.”

“Am I? I thought this was because your father lied. Wasn’t that the point?” Alethea sighed dramatically as Chloe kept glaring at her. “Stop glaring at me!” she whispered urgently. “This isn’t my fault.”

The two girls fell into silence. Chloe listened to the creaks of the old apartment building. She could hear her father snoring from the bedroom down the hall. He was a terrible snorer, always had been. Chloe had always known this. It had been that way for as long as should could remember.

As long as she could remember…

    *****
Chloe stared at the ceiling. It was many years before this had become a forbidden after-school pastime. Her legs were far too short to reach the end of the bed. In a…motel room. Smelled of lemony cleaning products and musty age. The blankets were scratchy and uncomfortable. Something was nagging at the back of her head, making sleep difficult. She knew she should be worn out after the day she’d had. She usually fell asleep so easily. But little Chloe couldn’t shake the feeling that something was not right. And, besides, her dad’s snoring was practically shaking the building. Chloe turned her head to look at him, sound asleep next to her on the double bed they were sharing. But where was her mother? And why did something feel so off?

Chloe reached out a little hand to shake her father’s shoulder. Make him stop snoring.

This was inspired by something random my friend said last night.

    Grain
Grain looked down at the multitudes of other grains like himself. Boy grains and girl grains and everything in-between grains. Millions, billions, who knows how many of them flew below him; some in the air too, part of a sand storm of epic proportions. Others still on the ground, not getting to be free in the sand storm like Grain did.
Despite the plethora of other grains for Grain to hang out with, and talk to and be close to; Grain still felt lonely flying up there and looking down at everyone else. The problem was, everyone was the same, and the Sahara Desert was filled to the brim with everyone. Grain hated it there; while everyone was nice to him, all they talked about was how amazingly hot it was every single day and how amazingly windy it was every single day.
In short, Grain longed for more, someone different and a different conversation. He wanted rain to fall on him, and something other than the occasional bug to crawl on him. He wanted to get out of the horrible, hot, monotony and learn something more than the weather and the wind of any particular day.
Then he realized this storm was different than others he has been in, he was starting to get much higher than before. A cooler breeze washed over him and just in the distance, he noticed blue. After many days of this constant blue and cool breeze, and finally the sweet silence of being almost alone, green appeared on the horizon. The other grains were scared of the green and the blue, sand color was all they liked, even Grain was a little apprehensive from the unfamiliarity of it all. But when he fell with the rain onto the jungle below, he knew all would be well.

    • July 1, 2010 9:21 pm

This is really beautiful. It’s definitely not something you think about very often, what it’s like to be a grain of sand. I like how I could always read between the lines how it relates to people moving away from the familiar. Very hopeful. Keep up the great work! 🙂

  14. July 1, 2010 7:13 pm

Okay this is something that I worked on today, but I’m not even sure if I even like it. But here You GO!!!! ENJOY!! Oh and CONGRATS MICHELLE!!!!
    ———————————————————————————————————-
    Assurance

Death struck me cold just like it does with every other living being on earth. It sad that if we didn’t have a belief in a higher, a more grander place we would probably all just be living without really living. Prowling around with a death toll on shoulders just waiting for the moment that we can finally and officially say goodbye. Yet of course I didn’t think any of these things as my heart drummed it’s last beat. And then it happened. Complete darkness surrounded me and I walked and walked until I saw this light. Once I was in direct contact with the light I saw someone. It came charging at me with swift assurance and once it got up to my face, I saw his wings and his ever growing pure white light. Cool calmness struck me and I knew that this is where I had to be. What I been waiting for.

“What are you doing here?” the angel growled

“Um…well I died…” I croaked with my panic and confusion. What is he talking about?

“No, no, no! Your in the wrong place; this is not a place for your kind!” He roared. It was then that I looked at myself. I had red leathery skin, I felt a tail swishing around my behind, and when I looked into the angel’s eyes I saw that I had horns.

“Go back where you belong” the angel said before he struck me so hard that I went flying where I started, right where you are now. In hell.

Sitting in the office, waiting for my mom to show up, I tried to understand why the substitute acted like he did.
    * * *
I had been sitting there quietly as he called roll. “Claire Todds?” asked Mr. Barn. I said “Here.” and looked up at the sub. When he located my voice and saw me, his nuetral features went snide.
“Alright, hand ’em over.” He’d said. I’d looked around the room at my classmates, completely lost. Hand over what? I thought. It had gone deathly quiet in the room, and I continued to look at him, as he held out his hand, then pointed at my head.
Oh, no. God, no. Principal Foster said she told everyone. No! My mind was in a frenzied panic. I’d been terrified, I couldn’t move. Then he said, “Give me your hat and bandana.” I managed to squeak out, “I’m allowed to wear them.” He looked at me dryly. “Not when theres rules against it and it violates dress code.” he said.
“I… I-I’m the exception.” I’d stuttered through it. He could not make me take them off. He couldn’t.
He had laughed when I’d said that, a cruel, harsh laugh. “Haven’t I heard that one before? Now. Hand them over, or I will take them.” I glanced around again and saw looks of horror, outrage, and curiosity. Why won’t anyone say something?
I looked up at his set jaw, his hard face. I looked in his eyes and saw no emotion, no empathy, and I knew then that he didn’t care, and wouldn’t understand.
I had started to say, go talk to Principal Foster, but before I could even finish, he snatched my hat, knocking off my bandana too.
The entire class gasped as I covered my bald head with my hands. I sat there, petrified in horror before I ran out into the hall, towards the principals office, crying the whole way.

Sitting here now, still crying,I keep trying to tell myself it’s okay, and he didn’t know. He’s a sub, how could he have known that I have cancer?

He laid his hand over the book silently. He had re-read it over and over again to a point that the edges of the pages were worn in a matter of months. She had known that, had made him read it to her at night before they fell asleep.

The house was silent. He felt as if he should be holding his breath, waiting for something. Had things really changed so much over the year? Erick still worked, still watched football, traveled to Berlin. He spoke to his friends, called his sister in Munich. He had fallen in love for the first time since he was a young man. He had turned fifty-one that January.

But she had walked out early that morning. He had felt her kiss him gently, thinking him still asleep.

Inside the book was a letter. She must have stuffed it in there before she left, before she drove away in the black rented Volvo, never to come back. He lifted it to its face before reconsidering- there was no one watching him, but the movement felt absurd. It would not retain her scent.

“I have no money, I’ve already ran out. I will be leaving Europe in two days anyway, so I figured I would go stay with my family- they can help.

“Please don’t think me ungrateful. I care for you very much and won’t forget the kindness you have shown me from the moment I stepped inside the restaurant. I hope to see you once more.”

It was a cold way to end the affair. Not affair, really, but no one had known about it, he hadn’t told anyone and she didn’t know a soul here outside of her aunt and uncle. She was only twenty, she didn’t know any better.

Of course Erick could tell himself that. She didn’t know any better, didn’t understand love at her age, didn’t understand him. But it was all lies; they would never see each other again, no matter what scenarios his imagination created for him. He had been born in Berlin and raised in Berlin. And he would be lowered into Berlin’s cold ground, alone.

Erick bowed his head and sobbed. Somewhere, he hoped she was crying too.

I really like this. Its… unique, something I didn’t expect to read at all. Not to mention the writing overall was done very well and was very expressive. Good job! =)

This piece is so different from the other ones in a very good way. The writing feels very real, and I can feel the emotion. It was interesting to read an adult man’s point of view too.

Woohoo paperback release!! I can’t wait for Guardian! 🙂

    Okay–so this is a snippet from a short story. It’s a history piece–hope y’all like it! 🙂

The air was different. It was light—hard to breathe. Kells grinned, his cream wings fanning slowly behind him. My knife is sticking into the ground, glittering in the morning light. I stared at him, my eyes wide and panicked as I let the magic flow through me. Flying when still in human form was tricky at best, and in Heliotrop, with all the winds that buffeted the mountain fortress, it was usually dangerous.

It was one reason we weren’t allowed to fly unless in full shift until we were at the end of our training. A rule I was on the verge of breaking. A breathe of wind slammed me in the face, and I let my wings shoot out as Kells lunged forward, his longstaff sweeping the air I had been in.

For a split second, I enjoyed the shock on their faces and the feel of the wind—the way it made my bird flex and scream, scrabbling for domination. I shoved her ruthlessly down, and let the wind carry me. A mountain current tugged at me, and I folded my wings in, letting myself careen toward the rocky ground where they were watching. The dive was dangerous—the speed was breathstealing and I felt tears gather in my eyes as I plunged toward the rocks and the glittering metal that was my knife.

I jerked out of the dive with a foot to spare, snatching my knife and rolling to my feet in a motion that wasn’t quite as smooth as Geoff made it look. I whooped delightedly, whipping around to pin Kells as a shrill whistle pierced the compound. Instinctively, we searched the skies—my aerial acrobatics were forgotten as we craned to see the incoming Flock.

The violet wings spread in an arch that was terrifying. I had never seen Lance White in phoenix form—when he came to Heliotrop, it was for meetings and ceremonies. His personal guard—the six who had been deemed the best of our ranks—streaked the sky around him, hues of reds and golds and grays that were ever shifting, ever protecting their violet leader.

When Kells spoke, his voice was shaking, and that more than his words scared me, “Practice dismissed—stay near the buildings and no shifting until your given leave. Indie, report to my office at midnight for your disciplinary actions.”

I really like this. The action is so . . . Like I can picture it. Like I’m right there. Very good.

Why couldn’t he control his tongue when he was around her? He was usually so careful and cautious with his words, but his brain was careless when it came to her. Her. He didn’t even know her god damned name.

    “What’s your name?”

His fingers tightened around the steering wheel when his lips slipped again. He hadn’t meant to outright ask. He was going to properly apologize and clear the tension. She was going to think he was an inconsiderate asshole who didn’t care about her feelings. She was going to tell him to stop the car and let her out. And it was going to humiliate him. He regretted throwing his bag of pills so far into the backseat. He needed them right now. So desperately.

“Weren’t you listening earlier, in Rite-Aid?” she asked quietly. “It’s Ollie. Ollie Jacobsen.”

Ollie. Oddly enough, it suited her.

“Oh, yeah, I heard. I must’ve just forgotten. I’m Danny,” he said. He pulled his hand from the steering wheel, and for one short second, he had extended it for her to shake. But then he realized how incredibly lame that’d be, and he jerked it away before she could respond.

“I know. Unlike you, I was actually listening in the pharmacy,” she joked, sending him a soft smile. He chuckled.

“So, where do you want to go?” he asked her.

“I don’t care. You don’t have anywhere to be?”

He thought about it. He had to go into work. It was crucial that he got himself back into Mike’s good graces after his blowup on that customer yesterday. So yes, he had somewhere to be. Tell her.

But for some reason, he couldn’t.

Instead, he revved the engine and sped forward; further and further away from Sterling Heights.

    “Nope.”

ooooohhh…I like this, hun. I’d love to know more–like why he wants pills, and what kind. And what he was doing blowing up that got him in trouble with Mike. More, please? 🙂
